Road Trip! - Mokpo

From the 5.18 National Cemetery, we headed for Mokpo. The only thing that we knew of Mokpo was that it was a port on the West coast of Korea. We wanted to see the ocean and Mokpo was the first city we saw on the map, that's how we chose it. Really, all the guidebook had to say about the city was that it had a ferry terminal, so we put that into the GPS. When we got close to the ferry terminal and port area, we were surprised how small, old and dingy Mokpo was. It seemed much more like a fishing village than a port city.

Since it was Sunday, we really didn't have much time to explore, so we decided we were just going to eat lunch in Mokpo, then start the long way home. Mokpo is almost directly across Korea from Ulsan, so the drive ahead of us was a little over 5 hours.

An alleyway

An alleyway filled with old people

The first section we walked through was called 'Marine Product Town' and it was filled with shops and booths selling, you guessed it, marine products...

A dried fish dealer

Next we came to a market.
It was pretty much a standard Korean seafood market.

The only thing new we saw was this stand.
The Korean says 'Dog Meat.'

The one stop shop for all your sin needs

The waterfront street

Also on the waterfront...

Cats in Korea are so filthy

This is where we had lunch.
We chose it because there were other customers and it had A/C.

All the side dishes

Korean Seafood Soup

No idea what animal that 'meat' comes from

Overall, the soup is OK. The flavor is good, but not really worth all the work. All the ingredients are added just as they are pulled out of the sea, so there is a lot of peeling and prying involved.

The port

Boats

Two frightening looking stores

The Avante parked on street

Our last meal on the road trip was at a truck stop.
Pretty fitting!

Andrew had mixed rice...

...and Judy had ramen.
