Shanghai - Nightlife

Before heading out one night

(F-off Blogspot!)

Des Lys - A French Bistro

This turned out to be the culinary flop of the trip. The wine was excellent and pretty much everything tasted good, but the food just wasn't French. It also followed an amazing Spanish meal from the night before, so it had big shoes to fill.

Us with our cute waiter

Group shot

Tuna and avocado salad

Salade de chevre chaud
All you could taste was the 'bacon.'
Even the lettuce tasted like ham.

Duck confit
Tasted like Thanksgiving dinner

Beef burgundy
The beef tasted like a delicious pot roast, but somehow the vegetables tasted exactly the way horse poop smells! It was actually really incredible/mind boggling how similar the taste was to a flavor you come across in a barn.

Sword Fish

After Des Lys, we headed to a restaurant we read about in the Lonely Planet that serves fried scorpion. Both Andrew and Korey were really excited for this, but a few minutes after we ordered it, the waitress returned to tell us they didn't have any left. We're not sure if they were out of scorpions because it was such a popular dish or because no one ever orders them, but either way it was sad.

No Belgian would bottle their beer in plastic...

Live music at The Cotton Club

When we first arrived, the place seemed a little strange, but we couldn't quite put our finger on what was strange about it at first. A little while after being there, we figured it out: the place was full of HUGE European dudes! The average height in the room was probably 6'3. It was crazy. Andrew has never really felt short before, and he certainly never imagined that would happen at a bar in China...

Determined to find a lady

The subway wasn't so scary this time

Have no fear pregnant ladies! Just because you have a bun in the oven, that doesn't mean you need to put away your spandex onsies. Gennie's Maternity has the the solution for you!

The city looks so awesome at night

The skyline via the sidewalk on The Bund

Hmm, I'll take 1 hotdog and 2 heart-shaped,please...

Self-timer shots!

Coolest photo ever

Local beer at the Bund Brewery

The House of Blues & Jazz
The band

There were some really amazing dance moves going on inside this place. We wanted to watch the live music, but it was hard to take our eyes off the wasted people dancing.

Pink pants!
(On our way out the door to see an acrobat show)

This would have been a really good picture had the auto-focus worked

Due to a mix-up with our tickets, we ended up getting our seats up graded to the center of the front row. That was awesome to be that close to some of the acts, but for others it definitely made it much more uncomfortable. The motorcycle cage/grand finale was one of those acts. We were seated probably 40 feet from the cage, inhaling exhaust and growing increasingly uncomfortable as they kept adding motorcycles to the mix. By the end there were 7 motorcycles driving around in there at once. It was awful.

After the show we went to yet another jazz club. The amount of live music nightly in Shanghai is staggering. Almost every bar we went into had a stage area and a band. Five straight nights of live music was awesome!

Shanghai - Out & About

McDonald's breakfast!

The number 8, in China...

Cabbage salad and a chicken 'breast'
It was in no way a breakfast item, but quite tasty!

Awesome bike ponchos

This was as close as we saw to someone sitting in that chair

The Westin

Expo adds were ALL over the city

The Chinese loved containers of loose leaf tea like this.

Umbrellas for waiting pedestrians
(to shield from both rain and sun)

That Louis Vuitton, he's a thinker...

World's largest Louis Vuitton trunk!

They use bamboo poles for clothes lines!

The gold building

Heading into The Westin for breakfast

What are you doing wearing your robe in the lobby, sir?

Mmm, non-Asian food...

Emerging from the darkness...

Creepy

After we sat down for brunch, we kept hearing loud cricket sounds. At first we thought it was fake, but once we investigated, we discovered they were real!

Huge!

From a distance, this building looked like it was falling down.

Crazy Shanghai architecture

Another newly discovered hobby of Andrew's: Taking pictures of reflections.

Looking good, Judy!

There's everyone!

That's a UFO that landed on the top of the Radisson

Capturing the moment

Oh Canada!

Whatever Macaulay Culkin is giving or getting, we don't want it...

This takes talent!

The figure outside of Madame Tussauds. No clue who he is...

More crazy architecture

Nanjing Road, one of the world's longest shopping districts

The Dollar Shop - A hot-pot chain restaurant in China.
It's like a personal shabu shabu. You order a flavor of broth and various vegetables and meats to add to it. There were almost so many options it was overwhelming, but it was pretty good.

And you get to wear a bib!
