Shanghai - Day 1

- The Metropole -
Our Shanghai Home

Hallway and bathroom

We arrived in Shanghai on a Tuesday afternoon. After we got checked into the hotel, and set our things down, we ventured right back out to pick up the Expo tickets we bought online and wander the city a little.
Korey

The Shanghai metro is frightening

In search of the 'travel agency' we bought our Expo tickets through. The agency ended up just being a lady working at a desk in an apartment. It was pretty sketchy, but the tickets were real and it wasn't a scam, so it didn't matter.

Mmmm, sweetmeat...

A quick refueling stop

Snacks!

This beer cost about $0.30. China is amazing!

The winning snack: Delicious sesame cookies

Nanjing Road

Mountain Dew clearly ripped their logo off from Tea Storm

The first round of food of the evening... Cigarettes on the menu!

Crab soup dumpling

Spring Rolls

It was weird. The soup was good, but there didn't seem to be any point in the dough. It was stuck to the wooden bowl, so we couldn't really eat it anyway.

At the next restaurant... Deciding our fate

Beef tendon
This tasted like a delicious, gourmet pastrami!

Fried garlic and beef tenderloin

This was supposed to be shrimp balls...
But, in reality, just a mix of giant mushroom cubes and tiny shrimp.

Frog legs!
The meat was good, but not worth working around the bones for.

Wang Steak!

The streets of Shanghai have ground effects...

Judy's Too Tongren "They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no'
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go go go...

This place pretty much ruined the entire trip for us. The band played, 'Rehab' by Amy Winehouse and got it stuck in our heads for the rest of week. Unfortunately, it was stuck in our heads at different times, so planting it into the others' heads turned into a mean game. It was awful. Thanks for nothing, Amy.

Chili Dog

Calamari

After Judy's Too Tongren, we stumbled across Malone's down the street

Almost every bar we went into in Shanghai had live music.

After Malone's, we tried to get a taxi home, but none would stop for us. Finally, a man on a motorcycle stopped and offered a ride. When he realized there were three of us, he just flagged down another motorcycle and we were off! Not the smartest move we've ever made.

Judy and our driver

Dangerous as hell. (We're sorry, Moms)
